Serving the medieval village of Blanchland since the mid 19th Century
For over 150 years, the Post Office has been at the hub of village life in Blanchland. Located within the old Gatehouse of the 12th Century Abbey, the building is steeped in history with the white Victorian post box being one of only three in the country. Complimenting the Post Office, the shop provides newspapers and magazines, ice creams (both from the freezer and from the soft 'whippy' ice cream machine), traditional sweets, jams and chutneys, biscuits, fudges, gifts and basic provisions. It's also a good place to find out what's happening in and around the village.
The last five incumbents at the Post Office still live in the village or nearby. Hilda Askew became postmistress in 1955 and held the post for an astonishing 34 years. She was followed by Andrea Hodgson, Kath Lennon, Jacqui & Ian Dart and in 2011, Shaun & Sally Kelly took the helm. After many years of visiting the village, Shaun, Sally and son Jake have made the move from Whickham, Tyne & Wear to make Blanchland their home and hope to provide the excellent, friendly service that all the previous postmasters and postmistresses have given over the years.
